The Rhode Island Community Planning Group for HIV Prevention (RICPG) is a coalition of community members
who work together to help prevent the spread of HIV in Rhode Island. Our diverse group includes those living with HIV/AIDS, their partners and families, service providers,
state department representatives, and other concerned citizens.
The vision of the RICPG is to end HIV infection in Rhode
Island.
The mission of the RICPG is to empower the community
to promote changes related to HIV prevention and planning through parity, representation and inclusion.
The goals of the RICPG are to make a thorough HIV
prevention needs assessment for the State of Rhode Island, to set prevention priorities for the State, and to develop a Comprehensive HIV Prevention Plan for the
State in cooperation with the Rhode Island Department of Health for the purpose of reducing the incidence of HIV infection.
Since 1994, the RICPG has played a key role in the implementation of many important changes in Rhode Island, including:
- the availability of anonymous HIV testing
- the creation of a needle exchange program
- the creation of unique personal identifiers (which allows for greater confidence in the interpretation of HIV data)
The RICPG has also helped to plan the locations of testing sites and identify priority populations.
The RICPG's current target populations are:
- Injecting Drug Users
- Men Who Have Sex With Men
- Youth
- Women
Within all target populations, special focus is placed on people of color and people who do not know their HIV status.
The RICPG was established in 1994 by the Rhode Island Department of Health Office
of HIV/AIDS & Viral Hepatitis, through a mandate of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
